When I purchased the Affinity software a few weeks ago I found it in some ways to be a bit of a struggle after using Photoshop and so I invested in a book I will not name to help me with some of the problems that I was having using Affinity.
The book was a complete waste of money, I found the instructions hard to follow and the so called illustrations were so small you needed a magnifying glass to see them, and the quality and manufacture was very, very poor.
Thank you Frank Walters and all concerned in the production of this helpful book. A good step by step guide to the basics like layers and masks, and how to use the advanced features of Affinity. While I’m used to using Photoshop Elements, there are functions in Affinity I hadn’t even guessed at, much less would have been able to figure out for myself. The book states you can request a set of hyperlinks to download the example photos used in it. When I did this, the author emailed me a compressed folder containing the actual photographs!
How’s that for going above and beyond? Firstly, I haven’t a huge amount to say about the content of this book as I didn’t spend much time reading it it was bought as a gift. From a cursory glance the layout doesn’t look particularly clear, however, and is quite cluttered. The reason for 2 star review is the poor quality of print and binding.
The whole book feels cheaply put together. Print quality and especially picture quality is quite washed out. Maybe I had a bad copy, but the book wasn’t cheap and so has been returned to Amazon. I’ve only given this 2 stars as the packaging and returns process to Amazon was fine. The Affinity photo editing app is a terrifc tool for editing your photos, absolutely packed full of features and unbeatable value for money.
The thing is, it’s so packed with features that it’s a little overfacing. This manual sorts you out. It treats the reader as an intelligent person but one who has never used a photo editing tool before. It gives you the basics and beyond, taking you through a series of tutorials so you fully understand what you need to do and it shows where everything you need it located.
It’s an abolute godsend. There are links to a stock photo site where you can download the photos used in the exercises. Or, it suggests, email the manual publisher and get the hyperlinks sent direct. I did this and a zipped file with all I needed duly arrived. Customer service above and beyond.
All in all, Affinity, this book and the help I received made my world a better place to be! Report abuse. This app is making big waves in the digital art sphere by doing things differently.
As digital artists and creators, we’re constantly looking for software to help us create our best work. There’s a lot out there to choose from but here’s why Affinity Designer might just be the app for you. Drawing apps like Adobe Fresco and Illustrator are similar to Affinity Designer in that they all feature vector graphics capabilities.
An even greater advantage to using Affinity Designer is that it can handle both raster and vector brushes, just like Adobe Fresco. However, Affinity Designer features a selection of over different vector brushes while Fresco has just 11 vector brushes to choose from. With Adobe Illustrator, you can create stunning vector-based graphics but it lacks the flexibility of changing between raster and vector. In the same way that we see Fresco and Illustrator work together as companion apps, Affinity Designer packs this idea into a singular experience.
This isn’t to say that Affinity Designer does everything. Aside from Affinity Designer’s wide range of capabilities, it’d be hard not to notice that it uses a one-time purchase model. Here, the square is a vector while the line was created using a rasterized brush. When it comes to other popular drawing apps like Procreate, Affinity Designer has a few advantages. The ability to automatically save files to your iCloud Drive is a big one. For Procreate users, saving files is something of a manual process.
Affinity Designer makes this simple. Procreate also only uses raster brushes in its app. And while the look of raster brushes may be greatly preferred among some artists, Affinity Designer has figured out how to create vector brushes that offers as much texture and personality as pixel brushes. Affinity products are cross-platform compatible, so you can use them on iPad Pro or Air, Mac, or Windows machines.
Plus, while both apps can edit Photoshop files, Affinity Designer is much better at handling vector files and preserving layers.
Within Affinity Designer, you can expect to find standard tools and features like artboards, pencil, shape, and pen tools.
To understand these tools we’re going to first review Affinity Designer’s different modes. There are three Personas or modes within Affinity Designer, and each Persona comes equipped with its own set of tools. As you may expect, you have the option of plotting your points individually with the Pen Tool and editing your points and curves with the Node Tool.
Then you have others options, like the Vector Crop Tool , which allows you to non-destructively crop your vector elements. Use it to hide or isolate parts of your vector graphics from your document. The Vector Brush Tool allows you to draw with brushes that have the look of raster brushes but with the added benefits of editing and scaling. Drag and drop stock imagery directly into your work and use the asset panel to store visualisation assets and more.
All asset packs can be shared between Mac, Windows and iPad. Edit and create brushes, with control over all dynamics supported by Apple pencil, and even import.
Any brushes you create can be shared across desktop and iPad versions as well. Curves, channel mixer, gradient map and more — you have a full library of 22 adjustment layers available with no compromise.
