In order for it to truly be a 2 calendar month task, you must enter the duration as 2 emos elapsed months.
Did you edit the bar styles? If you did not, then I suspect a problem with Project itself and suggest you try a repair through the control panel.
If that doesn’t help, then I suspect your Global file is corrupt. To fix that, find your working Global, move it to the trash and then re-open Project. A new default Global will be created. Note, you will lose any custom view, tables, filters, etc. If you did edit the default Bar styles, take a careful look at the parameters for the various bar styles. Note that if there is a conflict, the bar style that appears latest in the list takes precedence.
Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. RE: Durations – I am aware of the intricacies you pointed out regarding various durations. I am far from a professional scheduler and just use this software to develop ‘best guess’ engineering schedules of overall project durations to assist clients with establishing their general project timelines for heavy civil construction projects on the large scale.
I do like your recommendation for use of emos inlieu of months or days. Thanks for that suggestion! I have modified the display settings for individual bars, but have not altered the styles. This schedule, for some reason, does not appear to be responding to those changes however. I have also tried having co-workers print the file and they have the same issue as well so I doubt it is a problem with the software installation or Global file on my PC.
I have repaired the installation previously in attempt to fix this issue to no avail. Do the bars now appear? If you do the latter, how does it look in print preview? Use the organiser to recover the original Gantt chart view from the global template. Go to file, organiser, and copy the Gantt chart view from the global.

This prevents a page from being printed with bars or data on only a small fraction of the pages, which would result in an additional blank timescale beyond the last bar or column of data. If you want to scale the entire project not just the timescale portion as in method 1 , scale the entire project to fit the number of pages you want. When you scale your project for printing, the project information is scaled proportionally for height and width. Next, you will learn some basic information about Project and explore the main screen elements and Help facility.
USING PROJECT Before you can use Project or any project management software effectively, you must understand the fundamental concepts of project management, such as creating work breakdown structures WBS , linking tasks, entering duration estimates, assigning resources, and so on.
Make sure you read most of this text before using Project so you understand these concepts. This text provides instructions for using Project Professional. Before You Begin This appendix assumes you are using Project with Windows 7 or later and are familiar with other Windows-based applications. Check your work by reviewing the many screen shots included in the steps, or by using the solution files that are available for download from the companion Web site for this text or from your instructor.
Certain features require internet connectivity. You can read more detailed system requirements and download a free trial from www. Students can purchase a full version from sites like www. Many colleges and universities provide the software to students either on campus or through remote access.
If you can use remote access, the main requirement is high speed internet connectivity DSL or cable. Check with your instructor for details. You might also want to pay for monthly access to Project Online. Each section of the appendix includes hands-on activities for you to perform. NOTE: To complete some of the hands-on activities in the appendix, you will need to download files from the companion Web site for this text to your computer.
When you begin each set of steps, make sure you are using the correct file. Save the files you create yourself in a different folder so you do not write over the ones you download. Go to www. Enter your account information. You do need a Microsoft account. It used to be called a Windows Live account, so you may already have one if you set it up for Xbox , SkyDrive, Office , Office or other items.
If you do not have a Microsoft account, set one up for free. Install Project The installation for Project is a bit different from past installations. Microsoft has you download some software an image file and then burn it to a CD or hard drive.
You then run the software to install the day trial. Be sure to save the product key Microsoft provides and enter it when prompted, and select the automatic upgrade. Overview of Project The first step to mastering Project is to become familiar with the major screen elements and the Help facility. This section describes each of these features. Open Project There are slightly different methods for opening Project depending on your operating system. For example, in Windows 7, click the Start button on the taskbar, and then click Project or type it in the search bar.
Alternatively, a shortcut or icon might be available on the desktop; in this case, double-click the icon to start the software. Review the Get Started feature. Click on Get Started, as shown in Figure A Figure A Project initial options — access Get Started 3.
Start the introduction. Click Create, and then click Start, as shown in Figure A Project Get Started introductory screen 4. Review the first step, called Schedule your work, as shown in Figure A Review the other steps by clicking Next, as shown in Figures AA Schedule your work screen Figure A Report on progress screen Figure A Collaborate with your team screen 5.
Explore Help features. The help feature question mark in the upper right of the screen also includes a lot of helpful resources.
Open a blank file. Click the File tab, New, and then click the first option, Blank Project. Examine the main screen. Review the main screen elements, as shown in Figure A Look at some of the elements of the screen.
You can click that option to switch to automatic scheduling. You can access other views by clicking the View icon on the far left side of the ribbon. When you move the mouse over the split bar, your cursor changes to the resize pointer. Clicking and dragging the split bar to the right reveals columns for Resource Names and Add New columns. The Indicators column displays indicators or symbols related to items associated with each task, such as task notes or hyperlinks to other files.
The second column displays if a task is manually or automatically scheduled, as described later in this appendix. If you open a second Blank Project, the name will be Project2, and so on, until you save and rename the file. Access Project Help. The Project Help screen displays, as shown in Figure A Remember that this feature requires an Internet connection.

In addition to the default Gantt chart, you can view the network diagram, calendar, and task usage views, to name a few.
These views allow you to analyze project information in different ways. The View tab also provides access to different tables that display information in various ways. In addition to the default Entry table view, you can access tables that focus on data related to areas such as the Schedule, Cost, Tracking, and Earned Value.
To access and explore different views: 1. Explore the Network Diagram for the Customer Service file. Open the Customer Service file again. Click the Network Diagram button under the View tab, and then move the Zoom slider on the lower right of the screen all the way to the left. Critical tasks display in red. Explore the Calendar view. Critical tasks report Project Filters Project uses a relational database to filter, sort, store, and display information. Filtering project information is very useful.
For example, if a project includes thousands of tasks, you might want to view only summary or milestone tasks to get a high-level view of the project by using the Milestones or Summary Tasks filter from the Filter list. You can select a filter that shows only tasks on the critical path if that is what you want to see. As shown earlier, you can also click the Show button on the toolbar to display different levels in the WBS quickly.
Access filters. Click the Filter list arrow under the Data group , as shown in Figure A The default filter is No Filter, which shows all tasks. Filter list arrow Figure A Using a filter 2. Filter to show milestones. Click Milestones in the list of filters.

First a comment on your duration values. Please note that duration is always expressed in working time as defined by the Project Calendar. Construction projects are normally better described in calendar time i.
Duration in hours is unambiguous but days, weeks and particularly months can be problematic. For example, with the default definition of a day 8 hours , a task that runs continuously over 24 hours will show as 3 days duration. Save the project as a PDF , and then print or email it to stakeholders. Create a timeline of key tasks and milestones, and then drop it into an email, document, or slide.
Copy data from fields in any view, then paste them into Word or Excel. Let Project help you set up a SharePoint tasks list that syncs with your project. And vice-versa. Print a project schedule in Project desktop.
Notes: If you are printing the Calendar view, you can specify the range of dates to print by using the Dates boxes on the Print page. Need more help? Expand your skills. Get new features first. Skip to main content. I have repaired the installation previously in attempt to fix this issue to no avail. Do the bars now appear? If you do the latter, how does it look in print preview? Use the organiser to recover the original Gantt chart view from the global template. Go to file, organiser, and copy the Gantt chart view from the global. Now, you can’t do this while the Gantt chart view is the currently active view in your file, so first switch to any other view.
Estimate durations and lag in working days rather than weeks and months. It is is easier to read, less ambiguous etc. Interesting, I don’t do printing so I never really “pressed the envelope” to see what it can and cannot do. Although many users use Project for its Gantt Chart presentation but the application is not very flexible with graphical presentation. I can only suggest that you play with the page setting and find something that is acceptable and go with it. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.
I have the same question 5. Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. John – Project Volunteer Moderator. SteveDIY, First a comment on your duration values. Hope this helps. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to John – Project’s post on June 4, Thanks for the reply John. In reply to A. User’s post on June 4, Trevor Rabey. You can print the whole thing or pick date and page ranges.
You can include headers and footers on each printed page. Some views also include a legend of the types of Gantt bars on each printed page. You can add, remove, or change the headers, footers, and legends like this:.
Select the Header , Footer , or Legend tab. Type your text in the Left , Center , or Right text box. Want to get rid of the legend completely? On the Legend tab, under Located on , select None.
Need to change what Gantt bars show up in the legend? See Change the legend on a printed view for instructions. Create and customize the report until it shows exactly the information you want to print.
You can add charts, tables, and links, as well as change colors and add visual effects. For example, choose Page Breaks to see how much of the report will show up on a printed page. Then choose Size to pick a different paper size or rearrange the report elements until they all fit on a page. To specify months, under Print , select Months per page , and then choose 1 or 2.
To specify the number of weeks to show, select Weeks per page , and then type or select the number of weeks that you want to display in the adjacent box. If you want the weeks on the printed calendar to have the same height as those in the view, select Week height as on screen. Alternatively, you can change the number of weeks per page by magnifying the view. Note that the calendar will become unreadable if you try to print too many weeks per page.
See the tips below for ideas about how to format your calendar to make it more readable. Note that you cannot print a readable Calendar view of an entire year.
Instead, use a Gantt Chart view and follow these tips:. Change the timescale of the Gantt Chart to accommodate your year view. For example, you can change the timescale to show quarters over months and to use abbreviations for quarters and months. In the Page Setup dialog box, use the Fit to boxes to print the view on one page.
