She finds out that Eva d’Orsey was the mistress of a very wealthy man and the apartment was given to her by him.
She also finds a business card that leads her to a small shop that was a perfumery, also owned by Eva. There she meets an old woman, Madame Zed, that knew Eva and feeds her some information on Eva’s past. It’s and Eva, 14, is a maid at a very upscale hotel in New York which entertains famous people. There Eva eventually meets a wealthy man that is a gambler. Eva has a great knack for numbers so he entices her to go with him and travel and help him win.
She does go with him but only after she has learned, from another guest a prostitute , what it takes to entice men and get what you want. Unfortunately, the night she spend with this woman leads to her rape by another guest and an unwanted pregnancy. After many years with her new life, Eva runs into another young man, Valmont, in Monte Carlo she had met at the old hotel. They had become friends and he and his wealthy ’employer’, Madame Zed, had talked with her about how they made perfume and what a special talent it was to have just the ‘nose’ for it.
Eva and Valmont rekindle their friendship and affair and decide to go to Paris to open a perfumery. Eva teaches him how to market himself and his perfumes which eventually leads to the success of his store. Do you think Eva a good mother? Point to examples as to why or why not. And while I like dual story lines, it only worked for the Eva d’Orsay chapters as she was a truly engaging character, but so much less so for the bland and rather irritating Grace portions.
Adding to my frustration, it also felt rushed toward the end, an unsatisfactorily wrapped up conclusion after building so slowly throughout. It was still an entertaining read, but it wasn’t what I was expecting or hoping for on the topic. Don’t be fooled by all of the glamour of the cover and the cover copy. There are a few hefty themes woven into the narrative as well. Loss of innocence, passion in its various forms, following one’s heart.

When you first meet Grace, she is “new” to London’s social scene and yet her marriage is already devoid of love or joy, so you wonder how she ever ended up married to Roger to begin with. Also, the “person” who finally helps Grace make sense of things, seemed to me to be more of a “rival” than a “confidante”.. Still, despite these flaws, I did enjoy the story. I almost knew the end from page , but it was a nice read. Strong female characters, lots of information about perfumes visiting the Guerlain boutique, my favorite perfume brand , Paris, French sentences, they were all my cup of tea.

I had conflicting emotions–the need to find out what was going to happen to the characters and at the same time the dread of seeing the pages disappear, knowing that the book would come to an end. I’ve enjoyed all of Tessaro’s previous work, especially “Elegance. But “The Perfume Collector” is my favorite for many reasons; I enjoyed learning about perfume and would now love to make a pilgrimage to the lavender fields of Grass; plus as a Francophile, I enjoyed her detailed description of Paris and felt like I was actually there smelling the perfume.
Stories about a woman’s journey of self-discovery always appeal to me, the power to transform our lives, and this is a common thread through many of Tessaro’s books including “The Perfume Collector. Tessaro’s writing is pure elegance–like the title of her earlier book–and she appears to write effortlessly, nothing is contrived in her fiction writing skills. Before you know it you’ll be working your way through her entire oeuvre.

Together with the protagonists, Eva and Grace, we witness “enjoy ourselves at” is not a good word choice here a sophisticated London party, work in a hotel hosting the more ambitious representatives of the New York demi-monde, shop in Paris, create complex fragrances, and experience the occupation of Paris although this part was, for me, undeservedly undeveloped.
There are two parallel plots – one promising, dark and glamorous, with an interesting character, but the end of this part was unsatisfactory – Eva, in a slightly different incarnation, should have had a book all to herself. The other plot is supposed to be an uplifting story of an unhappy young wife’s transformation, but has a mightily heavy Cinderella vibe to it – get a seriously big windfall, girl, cut your hair, buy yourself a Balenciaga dress, appreciate your hidden talents and French cuisine, and the world will be your oyster.
If you reach for this book out of interest in the art of perfume-making, you may find something for yourself, although in my opinion the more appropriate title would be “The Scent Collector” – perfumes in the book are relevant only as long as they have the power of bringing specific associations to characters’ minds – the novel features perfumes smelling of rain and snow. And as a treat, one of characters is an authentic figure, Marie Zede, a mysterious ‘nose’ behind “My Sin”, Lanvin’s bestselling perfume.

Maybe this is why I do not use perfume, that is, because I am so sensitive to scents specially in other people. Anyway, this story is about an English woman in a marriage that is, let’s say, in a bad place. She finds out she has inherited a house in Paris from a person she never heard of. Well, I personally can not think of better gift life can give you then an inheritance you weren’t expecting.
Grace is not I enjoyed this book a lot. Grace is not thrilled and she wants answers about why she is inheriting this fortune and so the story takes us back to Eva’s story some twenty years earlier in the s. Although the mystery of the Parisian woman’s identity is rather predictable, that doesn’t lessen the storytelling, and the reader is taken on a descriptive-rich journey of Paris during two different time periods.
Some readers might not like the jumping back and forth in time, but I thought it was done fluently, and I enjoyed both story lines equally. Taking another drag from a cigarette, she looked out of the window, into the cold misty morning. Paris was waking now, the great dawn, streaked with orange, seeping slowly into a navy sky. Sleep had inched away from her these past years as the pain increased, shooting up along the left side of her body. Grace has a gift for numbers, and finds the rounds of lunches and cocktail parties with which her friend Mallory thinks Grace should be mainly concerned, something of a bore —and longs for something else to do.
Suspecting that her husband may have betrayed her, an angry Grace travels to Paris alone. Grace finds she is the recipient of a very large fortune, and is determined to find out what she can about the mysterious woman whose property she is now the owner of.
Her enquires take her to boarded up perfume shop on the Left Bank, where she runs in to an old woman, a woman who once knew Eva very well. Jasmin de la Mer, the label said. Opening it, she sniffed the cork. Its contents had long since evaporated, leaving a slightly grainy amber residue at the bottom of the bottle. But there was a ghost of the intensely white bloom, undercut by a coolness, an almost metallic airiness, slicing through the depth and lushness that lingered still.
In the evening under its vast domed ceiling, all of Monte Carlo society could be observed, including one delightful, wayward young woman and her tragically debauched English guardian.
