I’m only 37 pages into this book and though I admit the book looks pretty and simple to follow, I cannot express how truly terrible, disorganized and confusing the book has already been. Chapter 1 urges the reader to organize one’s photos into a file system and place them on a backup drive, NOT the hard drive.
Unfortunately, crucial information on how to do this properly, and pitfalls to avoid, was lacking and those omissions resulted in multiple duplicates of my photos in the Lightroom catalog. It’s no small task eliminating duplicates from Lightroom–something not covered in this book–so I had to wipe everything out import thousands of photos again.
Unfortunately, Chapter 2 contradicts the instructions in chapter 1, advising the reader to place all photos back on the hard drive otherwise loading photos will be too slow! That process was not as described and I lost most of my but backed up photo data.
As a result of that, I had to wipe clean the Lightroom library again and import photos into the app’s catalog system a third time! The author also advises the reader to organize the photos in a certain fashion in chapter 1, but as it turns out, a lot, if not most of the organization was unnecessary and in fact, will actually make it harder to organize them in Lightroom’s catalogs and collections system.
Update: Once past that nightmare, I think the book is helpful. Great effort is made to simplify complex operations, diagrams are reasonably good, the writing is engaging.
There are a few glaring deficiencies in this book. I wanted to enlarge a photo to work on blemishes and such.
How does one do that? Good luck finding it. It certainly doesn’t jump out in the index. After an hour of infuriating fumbling around, I concluded that I need to go to the library view to enlarge, then back to the develop section to effect the changes. That’s crazy. Is there a better way to do this? Impossible to know from this book. I wanted to jump to a step in the history to remove that step.
It would have been nice to know that if I hit the delete key, the entire photo gets deleted, not the step I wanted to be removed. How does one reverse the delete or even copy that photo back into the collection in which I was working? I stumbled around for at least another hour trying to figure out how to make that simple move, and the book was no help.
This is an author with a great reputation and a highly respected book. So then why isn’t there a page that lists all the shortcuts? To me that’s an incredibly basic list absent from the book. So the book is helpful but there are some substantial and significant deficiencies. I’ve read his previous Lightroom books and unfortunately, besides changing his work flow, there is not enough “new” info to make this worth buying.
But for me what was really disappointing was the fact that there are glaring typos – doesn’t anyone proof anymore? I wouldn’t even call them misspellings – just typos but come on! Back in Lightroom, you’ll learn how to show off your masterpieces by exporting them en masse, sharing via social media, creating fine art-style signed print layouts, slideshows, photo book, and web gallery projects. I bought the ebook version, loaded it into my ipad and I propped the reader in front of me while I did the exercises on my computer. I find this arrangement much easier than trying to maneuver a large paper volume with one hand and working the computer with the other.

Online photo editor | Photoshop Lightroom – Organize, touch up, and share your photographed world with Adobe Lightroom.
A relative newcomer to the Adobe suite of products, Lightroom focuses on the breadth part of the photo manipulation equation where the venerable Photoshop has eyes on depth. It does so with ease and Lightroom always retains the original photo. Lightroom photos can sync up and share directly to your Adobe Portfolio where you can build a photography website in minutes. Tutorials could use an improvement by being integrated into the program itself as they currently they exist in video format only.
Still, Lightroom plays well at its specific role in the Adobe suite of products and should appeal to any photography buff wanting to wrangle their ever-growing collection. When digital cameras and smartphones first came on the scene, you had to be cognizant of the photos you took because of storage limitations. You could only fill up that SD card with a couple hundred hi-res shots before another trip to the electronics store for a second.
Now with the advent of cloud storage and huge solid state memory drives we find ourselves at an interesting crossroads of efficiency: as something becomes more efficient we tend to use more of it.
This holds true for photography now. Lightroom accepts that challenge. Curious users can give it a shot using a 7 day free trial. Throughout the review there will be parallels to Photoshop and this is the first sign that Lightroom plays a much different role. In Photoshop you can create images on blank canvases. First impression is that Lightroom desperately needs a hands-on tutorial. It begs you to have a dual monitor setup to follow along.
Imagine a video game tutorial that happens outside of the game. The organization tools live on the left-hand side of the screen and on the bar above your photo, taking up the most real estate of any other toolset. Add Photos lets you add a photo to your workspace.
My Library gives you filters to select certain albums, recent photos, etc. Sharing lets you upload photos to your Adobe Portfolio. The real power of organization is delivered by way of star ratings and tagging.
Star ratings work like a review system of stars per photo. Tagging options include type, keyword, camera, location, people, and contributors. In that sense, you can create traditional albums but then cross-reference select photos by their stars and tags, which adds to the notion that Lightroom excels for people who have big libraries.
The editing tools populate the right-hand side of the screen. For example, if you have a photo with the sun in the corner and want to add artificial sunshine that washes over the whole image, you could use the gradient tool to simulate an increasing brightness from the sun source.
The desktop and mobile versions can sync together. For casual users in the iOS environment you can likely get what you need from Apple Photos.
However, the organization features only work within Apple Photos and Lightroom has better editing features. However, if you use Photoshop, Lightroom gets a leg up being part of the Adobe family for syncing purposes.
Lightroom is the best-in-class app for modern photography organization. Pricing and the subscription model may turn some users off, but Adobe does photography right, and continues to stay at the forefront of valuable apps for camera aficionados. The free trial gives you 7 days to decide whether to stick with Lightroom and can be canceled at any time, so if the use cases described throughout this review appeal to you, there is no risk to give it a shot.
