The Cog tool in Affinity is still the one thing I can’t live without. Totally agree. Out of all the vector based graphic software that I’ve used from illustrator, Coreldraw, and Inkscape, Affinity designer is one of the most user friendly and intuitive graphic software that I’ve used. It’s so hard for me to not use Affinity in this Illustrator class I’m in. I keep going back and worth and making the same things in Affinity and find it so much easier, user friendly, and most of all inviting!
Designer reminds me of Freehand. I prefer it to Illustrator no doubt. One of the coolest things is the ability to put a pixel layer inside a vector layer, it is like airbrushing.
Never used freehand. But we just started some pixel layer in Illustrator and man is it so much easier in Affinity! Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. All rights reserved. Want to join? Log in or sign up in seconds. Submit a new link.

The only reason I am considering the switch is due to the cost. A one time purchase is way more appealing that a subscription. Can Designer do all the things I mentioned above? Are there any things Illustrator can do that Designer cannot? You can download a free trial from the website and try to do all the things you usually do.
There are still some bugs and lacking features, but it’s a great alternative. I bought the whole suit and couldn’t be happier. Long time Adobe user here I absolutely love Affinity designer! Never going back Adobe. Sure Adobe has more features and has been around forever AD was redesigned packing all that history into a new and in my opinion, more elegant user interface.
Also Affinity is just on version 1. If i was you then i would try it out with a test version and then you can always decide. Also if you use the search function on reddit then you can find many topics related to this subject. Just a small addition to what you said, because somehow most users I’ve been talking to haven’t taken notice of Affinity’s apps prior than ish:.
Although the version is still 1. But a first version for windows was available in already. That’s because the updates are minimal. People still waiting years for small things like palette import support for ipad etc.
Their development is slow but the software is great for the average users Pros tent to go with adobe tho. I had enough knowledge in Ai that I was creating content, but the cost was killing me. I tried Affinity Designer and thought that it had almost everything.
I think taking the risk and diving deep into AD is a great option. The cost is only for one series, as far as i understand it. That means, should there ever be a Designer 2.
And it doesnt appear to be the programmers plan to add more tools in this series. I got into AD because i was fed up with the bugs and limitations of Inkscape, but keep going back, because AD isnt all that perfect.
For example: AD has no effects other than Power Duplicate. So no Blend, Warp effects that are vector, no real vector brushes AD’s brushes are bitmaps stretched along a path , no filter, etc. Inkscape’s snapping system is in some aspects superior to AD’s and i also like the Bezier Tool better. Plus Inkscape has a live tracing function.
AD’s advantages over Inkscape are: CMYK, a layer system with one object per layer, easy clipping and masking, Pixel Persona and an interface designed for professional artists. In my opinion, AD isnt so much an AI clone but a vector program for illustrators, with a focus on drawing.
You can do logo design, but i find it challenging compared to Inkscape. Yes, you’re right. You pay for the current version 1. But Affinity stated multiple times, that even after a V2. They don’t expire. Also, I agree with the other points you mentioned. Especially about the “replacement” statement. Affinity’s apps are not yet a replacement for industry standard design software like Photoshop or Illustrator. The “curse of Adobe” is its monopolistic stand in the design industry.
If it’s required that you work in a team for a project, you most likely won’t get around using Adobe’s products. Been using illustrator since the early 2ks. Made the switch coz I couldn’t afford it. Never ever looked back on illustrator and Corel draw and it was an over night change. I don’t understand how people even work on inkscape. It’s just a terrible software, sure I give credit for being free, and worked upon by some passionate talented individuals, but man it’s so damn buggy.
Ad is so smooth. Worked on some really illustration heavy files on my basic laptop, it worked perfect. I bought photo and publisher, and they are equally great. I find it very user friendly, irrespective of what people say. Alls not perfect in ad though. I doesn’t have trace, warp and magic fill, and some other important features.
If you see the official forum you’ll see all that people are asking for, some for years and still no where in sight. But I’ve worked around every single issue.
