It has pretty simple controls, and game mechanics. I’ve only had this game for about two weeks, but I’m doing pretty well in Very Hard mode, earning a Z rating on all levels so far except for one level fighting that bastard Frieza!!! The reason fans dump on this game is that it is more like a fighting game than a DBZ simulator like the Tenkaichi series. I personally find playing fighting game style to be a little more fun.
However, one significant advantage that the Tenkaichi series has over this game is the character roster. Tenkaichi has a glorious amount of cool characters, while this one only has about 26 I think.
The game as you probably know only goes up to the Cell Saga and only features 2 characters from the movies that take place during this timeline. It also has a lot of repeated animation, which leads to the idea that this game may have been rushed.
Maybe if we’d gotten a sequel to the game like the Budokai, Tenkaichi, and Raging Blast series, we could have gotten more characters, but that seems unlikely right now. Having less characters to unlock shortens the lifespan of a game that you’ve paid around 30 bucks for.
This game also looks gorgeous. All character models and backgrounds look great. There are other modes to play, but you can play most of these fights anyway in versus mode. Time attack, would’ve been more fun if you had a time limit instead of getting a time for the leaderboards.
I said there is a lot of repeated animation in cutscenes, but everything moves smoothly no matter how many times it’s repeated.
Overall if you like DBZ, you should enjoy this game. I just wish there were more characters, and in essence a longer campaign. Let there be a Burst Limit 2! Thinking that this would be a continuation of those games, I bought it and was sorely disappointed.
The combat system of the Budokai and Tenkaichi games, while certainly evolving while on the PS2, was mostly the same; any changes were easily learned with just a few practice matches.
This game, however, has a completely different combat system, a system that I, personally, dislike. Everything else about the game seems good; the graphics are a nice take on a series where graphics have been fairly stagnant for a while, and the cutscenes interspersed in fights are interesting. For someone who hasn’t played a Dragonball Z game before but is a fan of the series, this game will be a good entry point.
I read a lot before purchasing this game, couldn’t decide between Raging Blast or Burst Limit, in the reviews ppl said this one was better by a mile, and maybe it is, but the lack of depth of this game is a major letdown.
