One way to provide easy access to functionalities sorting, filtering, … is by creating Right-Click Context Menus. Sadly, Microsoft has, in recent years, made this even more complicated than it already was and it is quite undertaking to say the least! Through the use of his add-in, you simply fill in a couple menus to make selections and apply settings and the next thing you know you have fully functioning MS Access right-click context menus in your database!
Dale offers a fully functional demo version and he has both x32 and x64 versions of his tool! Up until now, I simply created a couple of shortcuts with I added to the SendTo Menu as described in the Reusable decompilation method section of the MS Access — Decompile a Database which did work very nicely and is relatively easy to setup. Simply put, it is a small Access Database something had to do the work, so why not our favorite workhorse MS Access!
This way you have control of which file extension display the context menu and which command will be available to you, or not. Make your selections and the simply click on the Create Menu s button. Then the next time you are in Windows Explorer and right-click on any of those files you will see a context menu such as.
Now, obviously my original intent was to simplify my own Access needs, but this utility can be used for any extension. So you could make a context menu for Word or Excel, ….
Currently, this demo is in BETA phase. It appears to work based on my testing, but I would like to add more features and checks time permitting. That said, with the various changes in OS and MS Office products there have been a few bumps in the road trying to get it to install properly with the latest and greatest versions.
In a recent thread on UtterAccess , one member reported that they managed to get it properly installed and the solution was to actually install the IndenterVB6. Seems counter intuitive, but definitely worth trying out so you can continue to use this small, but powerful tool!
Fellow MVP Tom van Stiphout has now confirmed that the above is no longer true and that Smart Indenter is now compatible with all versions. If you have never heard of MZ-Tools, I would urge you to take a look.
I should also state that I have no affiliation with Carlos or this product. This is simply my opinion. A nice thing to know is that, if you already have a prior version of MZ-Tools installed, you can install this new version without needing to uninstall your current version. Furthermore, I was pleased to see the installation routine asked to import my settings from my prior version, thus saving me the time of setting up my preferences error handler, procedure header, module header, code library, ….
It offers numerous customizable options to suit your specific needs. That said, I recently tried installing on a machine with Office and it would not work!?
What to do. You must install Mz-Tools first and then Smart Indenter. So the conclusion drawn from my experience, it would appear, is that Mz-Tools must be installed first! If you have any insight into the nature of the problem perhaps even an alternate solution or if you can confirm my fix, please post a comment. As an MVP, we are granted the privilege of getting Not For Resale licenses of certain software to take for a test run. Below are my thoughts. The usage of the Total Access Analyzer is once again very straight forward and highly customizable!
You can not only select what type of objects tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, modules, command bars your wish to analyze, but you can select the specific object itself. So you can analyze just one specific table or the whole database in one shot. The Analysis is relatively speedy, especially when you think of just how many elements it is checking for.
The result were very impressive and well organized so as to facilitate addressing the urgent issues first and progressively address suggestions and performance recommendations. Not only do you get a list of issues, but another truly nice feature of this add-on is that when you select any individual entry, you are given a detailed explanation in the lower pane.
I found this to be a great help as in numerous cases it explains how to fix the issue either through the UI or even giving you the VBA property to edit. It is an easy to use tool and provides a huge amount of useful information in bite size piece that permits a developer to tackle one by one.
It is highly flexible as well. I am glad that I had the opportunity to become aware of this add-in and I would have no hesitation to recommend to both new and experienced developers. Seriously, this add-in would have saved me hundreds, if not thousands, of hours searching online, posting to forums, to find out how to code what I needed to do.
Beyond which, it provides the user with a standardized set of procedures, instead of trying to piece together countless routines found here and there as you search online. Just yesterday, I needed a particular routine and instead of searching online, as I always have done until now, I opened the TVSB, performed a quick search, exported the appropriate code into my module and was back at work in a matter of minutes, if that!

I have no affiliation with above mentioned website, developer, product, company … The above is an independent, unsolicited post based on my personal opinion. Other Articles in this Series. So I set out to try and figure out a better a solution, one that would: only be available for all access files or whatever extensions I specify did not require extra key sequences did not require manual editing of setup files and this is why, last night, I developed the Windows Explorer MS Access Database Right-Click Context Menu Creator.
What is the Context Menu Creator? Then the next time you are in Windows Explorer and right-click on any of those files you will see a context menu such as Now, obviously my original intent was to simplify my own Access needs, but this utility can be used for any extension. In no event will Devhut. Upgrading from a Prior Version A nice thing to know is that, if you already have a prior version of MZ-Tools installed, you can install this new version without needing to uninstall your current version.
Installation Nothing could be simpler! Impressions The usage of the Total Access Analyzer is once again very straight forward and highly customizable! Once you select the object to analyze, then you decide what analysis to perform. Conclusion I am truly impressed.
Cons: I wish it could be somehow directly integrated within the VBE as done with certain other add-ins rather than a separate popup application. That said, even though it would be nice, I myself am not sure how it could be accomplished. My other issue is that their code uses Early biding which I try to avoid normally as it can causes reference issues.
So their code is a nice starting point, but I would convert most of the classes, procedures,… into late binding for my own purposes.
Over the course of several years, I have learnt that Late Binding avoids reference issues and this outways in my opinion any performance benefits Early Binding presents.
At the end of the day, each developer has their own opinion and experience with regards to this aspect of programming, so feel free to make up your mind on this aspect yourself. To learn a little bit more about the pros and cons of Early Binding vs. Late Binding take a look at Early vs. Pros: Easy to install Can be integrated to work in a team environment untested Easy to navigate and work with It is very intuitive Came with a user manual!
Just this to me put this application above most others!!! Although, in this case, a manual is not necessary. The code itself, is well categorized so you can find things quite easily just by noising around. Effective search tool enable one to quickly search through the repository. You can add your own code procedures, modules, … to the repository so you can build upon what is already there. Good export utility export directly into your module, to a file, … Customizable — You can configure the Error Handler and other elements to suit your programming methodologies.
