After lots of tinkering I think I’ve found the solution. I’ve been able to duplicate it on two different Acer laptops that came with Windows 10 in S Mode. As soon as you boot into Windows with Secure Boot disabled it appears to turn into regular Windows 10 Home. To give more explicit directions, which seemed to work on the Acer laptops I had success with. On these machines I had to create a supervisor password before it would allow me to disable Secure Boot.

After doing both of these things I rebooted into Windows and checked the activation status which showed that it was running an activated copy of Windows 10 Home not in S Mode. Now the machines were running regular Windows 10 Home, without the need for a Microsoft account.

I hope someone finds this tip useful. It took several hours of experimenting to figure out. I did a fresh install of Windows 10 on both machines but I don’t know that it was a necessary step. You can just decline the sign-in and it will let you turn off S mode.

It’s the same with any other app on the MS store. The app in the Microsoft store would not allow me to decline signing in. It allows you to decline signing in to get other apps but not the one required to get out of S Mode. Other apps allow you to skip the sign in but not this one. I tried. You shouldn’t enable it in the first place. Shouldn’t buy hardware with a preinstalled OS in the first place. What’s up with people being OK with paying money for less control and less options?

You can’t just settle for people being stupid, you can actually educate them. People have been and will always be stupid, you will never teach them all because they will never want to learn. Installing Windows may be an easy task for you and me, but imagine all the people who would be incredibly lost because they have absolutely zero idea about how to install Windows.

But to assume that’s a good option for everybody is just stupid. It sounds to me like a car guy saying “why would anyone buy a car with the factory installed wheels and breakpads? You obviously buy them separately and install them. What’s up with people being OK with paying money for less control”. Does that sound sane to you? Can be solved by computers requiring licenses like cars. People aren’t born with the knowledge of operating computers.

I think I’ll just use a mailinator or similar address if they allow it. But it doesn’t work for me.

I’m on version You have me wondering if there’s some other factor I’ve missed. The ones I did also involved a fresh install of Windows 10 using a local account. I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it. I do know that the one remained in S Mode even after the fresh install, until I disabled Secure Boot.

I didn’t reinstall, I just disabled secure boot and looked at the S-Mode status. I confirmed in Windows that secure boot is disabled. I believe Microsoft claims it’s for enhanced security.
