Layed windows are cut out of the house so a textured background which in hindsight I should have added would have shown through. You can also copy masks from one Pixelmator Pro document to the other. Place a mask over a layer or layer group. Browse your device to find an image you’d like to use for a mask. Command-drag any image, shape, text, or image from Finder onto a layer to create a mask. To edit a layer mask, you’ll first need to select it. You’ll recognize mask layers from the icon next to them. If the mask layer is subtracted, click the Mask button to reveal it.
Once you’ve made edits to your mask, you can refine it using the Refine Mask tool. Refine your mask by adjusting the options in the Tool Options pane: Shape Roundness: Adjust how much to round the mask outline. Edge Softness: Adjust how much to soften the edges of the mask outline.
With softer edges, the masked area will blend in better with other parts of the image should you copy or edit it. Expand: Change the size of the mask.
Mask Subject: Automatically create a mask for the subject in your image. Smart Refine: Use a machine learning-based algorithm to intelligently detect intricate details like hair or fur at the edges of the mask and automatically refine its outline for you.
Invert Mask: Inverting a mask makes the opaque areas of the masked image transparent and vice versa. Add or subtract areas from the mask: Use the Refine Edge Brush to add or subtract only at the edges of the mask. Use the Basic Brush to add or subtract from the mask as if painting with a basic brush. To link or unlink a layer mask, do one of the following: In the Layers sidebar, double-click the link line of the mask. You can also drag masks from one Pixelmator Pro document to the other.
A copy of the original mask will be created in the new document. IMO it’s a must have for a serious editing app. I will certainly choose it when this is available.
I am just looking for a PS replacement to work with my iPad Pro and pencil. Still can’t find the solution and I believe this is the case for most designers and photographers too.
Thank you. Sun Dec 04, am Made an account merely to comment here. Pixelmator for iOS needs masks added asap. I am not pleased at all. Sun Jun 04, pm This really is a crucial feature. I hope the devs realize this and are working towards an update. I did not get it to work Tue May 07, pm Hi Michael. I think of clipping mask as a way to separate colour information on one layer from transparency information on another. So, a great way to paint your windows blue but not so good at cutting holes.
Holes are better cut by a mask rather than a clipping mask or, if you’re dealing with shapes by using subtract. To subtract one shape from another, highlight both shapes in the layers pallette, right click on the top one and select Subtract. It will cut the top shape out of the bottom. Hope this helps. Have put quick sketch below. The windows are cut out of the house so a textured background which in hindsight I should have added would have shown through.
Wed May 08, pm Hey st3f Very cool! Thank you very much for pointing out what now seems so obvious. How come I didn’t see this up to now? Now dear Wizards behind Pixelmator, since I’m here anyway: this would be perfect if it would work on Layer-Groups too. Or is there already a obvious way to do that I missed again?
Thu May 09, am Thank you for this tutorial. I appreciate it. Is there a way to paste an image any kind of image, pixels, shapes, text whatever INTO a layer mask. I’d like the freedom to paste anything I want into a layer mask. Is that possible? Fri May 10, am Great! Thanks again! This will save me a lot of time and turnovers to other apps! Big fan of Pixelmator since it’s early days. Keep up the good work! Fri May 10, pm Happy to help! Sun Oct 06, am Maybe I missed this.
When you have created a clipping mask how do you add formatting to it like, strokes, shadows, etc. I have an eclipse shape with a photo and I want to add a border. I would appreciate your help. Sun Oct 06, am Hi Marcia. This is a little tricky. In a clipping mask, the bottom layer provides the opacity and the top layer the colour.
The bottom layer has the shape you want but any style you put here has the colour information of the top layer applied to it afterward. I think that the logical place to style this would be to group the two layers and style the resulting group. Unfortunately, at time of writing Pixelmator Pro doesn’t allow styles to be applied to groups.
