I will admit from the start that I am not responsible for the licensing, so I likely can’t provide more details than I have, but I was working on hyper VM, where the idea is to deploy several instances of windows 10 enterprise under our volume license key. But right now I’m doing this in a test environment, and so I have concerns.
I’ve read a dozen articles and posts on this, but my questions aren’t answered by what I’ve come across. Each time I deploy an image, sysprepped but with the enterprise volume key in place, to a new VM, does this “use up” a license? If I delete that machine and create another one, does it use a previous activation, or does it use yet another one?
How can MS know the difference between each VM for licensing purposes, or how many VMs are active on the machine at one time in order to prevent undue costs? Allowing multiple people to remotely access a Desktop OS gets expensive and complicated, license-wise.
Acitvations and licenses are not the same thing. Each time you activate you do use an activation, but there’s no real limit on those. If you run out, you just contact the VLSC and ask for more.
Seems unlikely that MS wouldn’t keep a count of how many unique hw profiles are using a volume license, since it would be relatively easy to do, outside of the vm situation. How are you activating?
Then Windows 10 Enterprise is not a Windows license itself as you will need an underlying Windows 10 Professional License For example I have VDI solution using Windows 10 linked clones But for link clones, recommended to use KMS instead of online activation. I’m not sure you are correct.
I’ve read a lot that contradicts this. I am sure you aren’t saying I cannot remote into a windows 10 physical machine. Our license isn’t built upon a pro license. It’s just enterprise. It started out education, but once activated only says enterprise everywhere, and as far as the internet is concerned, the features are identical. Please clarify your first statement, perhaps with a citation I can reference. I really don’t understand licensing or most of the acronyms you used in the first sentence, and just everything I’ve read says a license can be used to run it as a VM, just that one license doesn’t count as both a physical and virtual, you need one for each.
Enterprise licenses are upgrade licenses that require a previous license before being valid. This has always been true. For Education, you can upgrade from Home, but if you are not Education you have to have a Pro license before upgrading to Enterprise. Reading more, it appears I’m really boned here. There’s apparently no way to set this up without some sort of recurring subscription cost. I’m just I was totally wrong about how all of this works, and it means I can no longer proceed.
I can’t do subscriptions or really change any licensing. I can cover licensing for any number of machines, but apparently if you run windows in a VM you need all sorts of other things, and can’t just do 1 to 1.
It might help if you explain what you are wanting to do better. You mention deploying several instances of Win Do you mean you are deploying these ‘instances’ to desktops or are you wanting multiple VM’s of Windows10 for remote access? The only “subscription” you would need is if you have any non-windows devices accessing the VM in which case VDA licensing is required and that is a yearly subscription.
Need to run multiple windows 10 VMs on a single machine, with windows 10 enterprise as the host could use server, but not sure it matters. These VMs would each be accessed by multiple people at different times throughout the day student use. I’m not sure SA covers that and not just primary user stuff, someone can maybe enlighten me. And yeah, one scenario would be non-windows devices accessing them. This pretty much needs to be zero additional cost because there are “better” options a subjective term.
